TIMBUK2 CLASSIC MESSENGER BAG (00:01:53)

Pros:
-Has an extra strap for added stability
-Can manage capacity
-Lots of designs/colors

Cons:
-Not great for carrying a laptop
-Feels like a giant bag

As a laptop bag, it won’t offer much in terms of protection for your laptop. BUT we’ve grown fond of the bag during our review period as it very handy to haul things around.

CASE LOGIC BRYKER MESSENGER BAG (00:04:20)
Pros:
-Comfortable bag to carry
-Very portable

Cons:
-Smaller capacity
-No other design options/plain

Val’s goto bag as it carry’s everything she needs for her commute to the office. It’s a smaller bag so if you’re planning on carrying more than a laptop and a couple of notebooks and other small doohickey’s, go with another bag.

SWISS GEAR INTERNATIONAL CARRY-ON SIZE LAPTOP BAG WITH PORTABLE POCKET CHARGER (00:05:42)
Pros:
-Largest capacity in our list

Cons:
-Handles like a box with straps attached to it
-Laptop is hard to take out

We were so surprised at how terrible this bag was given our experiences with Swiss Gear products in the past.

This laptop bag is way to big for the strap, the laptop gets caught on the edges of the bag as you pull it out and the zippers love water.

HERSCHEL SANDFORD LAPTOP MESSENGER BAG (00:08:48)
Pros:
-Ton of different ways to carry the bag
-Large handles
-Large capacity/Big pockets
-Lots of colors and designs

Cons:
-No compartment for tablet
-Laptop removal is mildly annoying
-A little more awkward to use

Apparently handles on bags are useful? This is Aaron’s goto daily bag. It stands up on its own, can fit my portable tripod easily and holds my Studio 3’s with ease.

The Sandford also doubles as a backpack that is comfortable enough to use on a ~20min bike ride.

If you need a well performing, useful bag, it’s hard to argue against the Herschel Sandford.

tomtoc 15.6 Laptop Cross-Body Messenger Bag (00:13:12)
Pros:
-Well designed bag
-Fairly water resistant

Cons:
-Secondary pockets are too small
-Terrible handle

Tomtoc surprised us again with their messenger bag. We’re usually not fans of Amazon-only brands but Tomtoc did a great job with the deign of the bag. It’s quite water resistant, stores lots of doohickeys and your electronics are well protected.

The only thing that we really don’t like about the bag are the front pockets are too small and the weak handle.

SAMSONITE XENON 3 TECHLOCKER (00:16:03)
Pros:
-lots of dividers
-large capacity

Cons:
-Bulky, boxy feel to it.

In a race to worst bag in this video, it was a tie between the Booq Shadow, Samsonite Xenon 3 and the Swiss Gear International bag. The only saving grace for the Samsonite is the location of the laptop and tablet storage area. It sits right in the middle of the bag and offers more protection than the average laptop bag.

Beyond that, the Techlocker handles like a giant box with straps on it.

AMAZON BASICS (00:18:11)
Pros:
-Good Price
-Good size
-Basic!

Cons:
-Basic?
-Feels cheap
-Low storage capacity

Cheap. BUT it gets the job done. Not well, but if all you need is a bag to ferry a laptop around, the Amazon basics bag might be worth considering.

We personally wouldn’t get one for our own laptops though as we feel our expensive gadgets deserve better.

INCASE BLACK REFORM CASE (00:19:58)

Pros:
-Slim
-Best laptop protection
-Large handle

Cons:
-Not a lot of carrying capacity

The standout feature of the Incase Black Reform is the material that the case is made out of. The Incase Black Reform sits well on the body as it doesn’t slide around like the other bags do in this list.

This laptop bag also provides your laptop with the most amount protection.

BOOQ Shadow (00:24:42)
Pros:
-Comes with a tracking feature
-Custom front latch

Cons:
-Custom front latch is terrible to use
-Poor carrying capacity
-Hard to use

We paid $200 dollars for this bag and it was discontinued a couple of months after we bought it.

The design of the Shadow feels like a bag that’s been wrapped around a laptop because it’s not useful. The storage capacity is a little lower than most bags because of its tapered design BUT the kicker for us is the custom latch hardware. It makes the bag terrible to use…

  12. Thank you. You really helped me to find a bag for my 17" laptop and all of the extra equipment I need to carry. I think the Hershel (?) bag will allow me to go from carrying a laptop bag and a small duffle bag to one bag. Thank you again. I will subscribe.

Those closures on the Booq are called G-hooks, because they’re shaped like the letter G. G-hooks were never meant for quick release, more for occasional removal and strong, reliable attachment with no moving parts, unlike a plastic buckle. It looks like Booq just put them on for the gimmick factor.

Swissgear lives up to its reputation. It’s owned by Wenger, and even though Wenger is now owned by Victorinox, Wenger always had inferior design. I’ve never liked any Wenger product.

I have a couple Timbuktu bags and neither of them have sleeves that are as bad as that one. Both mine are a few years old so maybe the company succumbed to cost cutting measures?

  31. Good reviews!!! I have a classic Timbuk2 with the Crater laptop sleeve and it protects way better. I have traveled around the world a few times with it and have not had any issues. They only reason why I do not use it as my travel bag anymore is because backpacks have the capacity that I need. I still use it as my office bag.

  40. So if you had a 17" laptop in a sleeve would would be ok with the Timbuk2? Is there enough room to store it in front of the computer pocket? I have the large messenger bag that is a few years old and Laptops have gotten quite a bit lighter and thinner the they were many years ago. It is now too large for regular use.

  44. I’ve got a Thule crossover 2 convertible laptop bag 15.6inch -, it’s bulky style and a bit heavy when you have stuff in it but looks very professional and smart. It is made from a very strong suitcase like material, water resistant. lots of pockets and compartments inside and out. You can carry it like a back pack or like a messenger style bag you can fold the backpack arms or whatever you call them inside the bag so they are hidden the strappings is very thickly padded. When I wear it on my back you forget how heavy it is when carrying it in the hand or in messenger style.

The padding inside the bag is very thick so would be very hard to damage the laptop it has dividers so you could have a tablet as well or a second smaller laptop. you could use the main compartment to store clothes if you were going away for the weekend. The bag will stay standing upwards if you have anything inside of it or not.

It’s an expensive buy but i do not regret buying it a beautiful bag comes in black or blue, you will not find a better bag than this, the company do have other styles of laptop bags. I got mine via amazon about £130 last year they stopped selling them but can be bought elsewhere. Recommend you review this one.

This bag is the JAMES BOND of laptop bags and worth every penny!

  47. It is not possible to properly review bags without including Peak Design. I’ve tried dozens of bags, and I’ve beat many of them up over the years, the answer is peak design as long as price isn’t your most important factor.

They’ are a Small SF company that aims to make bags for photographers but I promise you if you’re picky and you need a quality back, you won’t be disappointed.

Btw the old original Timbuktu bags were the best, now they are garbage

  49. Thank you for your time testing these bags under real world conditions. The work you put in is really really clear in your reviews! (And they’re amusing as well) But I think the Timbuktu you reviewed was a basic bag. I purchased the large Timbuktu pro messenger and it has a padded laptop sleeve on the back of the bag with room for power box, cords and more. The inside has plenty of pockets for small stuff and a pocket that adjusts in size. The strap is well padded and I can carry a whole lot of files and a few books, if needed. It’s a truly great and comfy bag – even if it is just black.
